My wife Ashley and I took a drive along the PCH yesterday while listening to this mix. We drove up into the Santa Ynez mountains for a hike up to the falls near Eagle Rock. The mix made for the perfect golden sunlit drive. I didn’t quite plan it but this collection of songs somehow perfectly encapsulates the emotion and feeling of Southern California. From my current obsession that is the Alabama Shakes, to the much slept on LA band Rival Sons, to Best Coast’s ode to SoCal, to Bahamas beachy “Caught me Thinking” among the other classics from the likes of Nirvana, Elvis, Dylan, and the Boss. My original intent was to simply make a pure rock mix. What resulted was an ode, nay, tribute to this wonderful state of California. We will miss you.

A few days ago I was listening to “Pet Sounds” by the Beach Boys and when the album got to “Let’s Go Away For a While” I thought to myself, “wow, Stereolab must had heard this and thought ‘we need to make music that sounds JUST like this.‘” So afterwards, I began stringing together a bunch of music I love that sort of has this 60s mod post pop vibe to it. I think the music has this free spirited and somewhat French vibe. That’s obviously due to the Stereolab I think. The mix feels perfect for the spring season. With it’s effervescence and charm, it goes perfect with a sunny day or could even brighten up any spring shower. Enjoy!

I started this mix back in early February with the intention of posting on Valentine’s Day. I got tied up in things and never really got around to finishing it up. Broken Hearted Blues is a mix that everyone can relate to. We’ve all been there before. This mix revolves around those last goodbyes. The longing for love and the way it feels to lose it. For those in love, like me, it’s a reminder to be thankful for having found love.

Like the original Tron, the sequel released nearly 30 years later, had a lot going for it. The visuals were stunning, the cinematography great, but the writing was terrible and the third act was a snooze fest. One thing that was not boring though was Daft Punk’s epic score. I found myself listening to the soundtrack soon after the film’s release more than much else at the time. My one hang up though was there was obviously missing tracks from the commercial release. So, I took the time to do some digging on the internet and compiled what I believe to be the complete score to the film including the 2 80s pop tracks from the arcade scene. Once again, Journey shows up, most likely an ode from Joe Kosinski to the original film. It truly is a shame the film was really just a vehicle for Disney to sell toys and video games. None the less, I was very impressed with Kosinski’s first feature as a director.

In continuing last week’s geek themed mix I thought I’d share another complete film soundtrack from my collection. The classic Tron soundtrack is by far an amazing feat. Wendy Carlos, the score’s composer, was a pioneer in electronic music. She also scored Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining” so that gives you a sense of her pedigree. It mixed moog, chanting vocals, electronic orchestration and live orchestration. Journey was also commissioned to create two original pieces of music, “1990s Theme” was the iconic light cycle battle sequence. The score ranks up there with my favorite Tangerine Dream scores for “Near Dark,” “The Thief” and “The Keep.”

Next week I’ll be sharing Tron Legacy Complete as a companion piece to this wonderful score.

This week’s mix may be a bit of an acquired taste. It’s a fun selection of Geeksta Rap, chip tune instrumentals, remixes of iconic nintendo game music, 8-bit covers of pop and hip hop, and hip hop that samples nintendo game music. In a way, if my 12 year old self had the ability to make a mix this is what he probably would have made. It’s definitely not meant to be taken too seriously. Enjoy!

This week brings another guest mix from my good pal Diffan Norman. Diffan is one of those guys that if he put a website up with his boards people would go apeshit. He also happens to be one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He’s a Malaysian badass!

Rouge is a sexy mix of smooth 80s fm radio sounds. I imagine it as a soundtrack to a neo-noir romance film directed by Wong Kar Wai or someone more obscure. Just picture an American traveling over seas and falling in love with an exotic asian woman. That is this mix!

Next week, a new mix from yours truly.

Enjoy!

Bran Dougherty-Johnson is a good buddy I met back in 2006 when I partook in his ongoing series, Psst! Pass it On. Bran, for those who don’t know, is a designer/director who has forged his own path in our industry. Something not many of us can say. He takes on projects that he believes in where he can explore his own visual voice and his unique naive style of storytelling.

His guest mix is called “Out of the City” and it’s a travel mix of sorts for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city to relax where life moves at a slower pace. Enjoy!

*UPDATE*
I apologize that the mp3 preview of this mix is not working. The download option does indeed work but my software for creating a single mp3 with multiple tracks is having a problem with this mix. Thanks for letting me know guys.

Evan di Leo, a good friend who hung out with us at Tahoe (schooled us in riding the mountain), has another great mix to share with us. Action of a Prism is a post modern mix of sorts, colorful in it’s order and definitely a great mix to amp you up.

As a reminder, Evan is a great designamator and pretty sick illustrator as well. Be sure to go through his site and to check his blog.

Enjoy!
