That song is Fleet Foxes’ cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” It is a tribute to the late and great singer who passed away while we were in Tahoe. Last week Ash and I drove up to Tahoe to meet some good friends for an extended weekend of fresh powder on the mountain. We rode until our bodies could take no more and spent some time making money at the poker tables to pay for the lift tickets. All and all it was an amazing time. This mix was supposed to accompany the drive yet I couldn’t find a blank CD to burn it on. Yes, our car is THAT old, and we still have to make CDs to enjoy music while driving. Regardless, I still found time to jam this while we were there encapsulating the memories and good times we had. So you may be thinking, what the hell does this all have to do with me? Alex’s concept behind his first guest mix, Prairie Fire, “is somewhat inspired from growing up Idaho, but more of a spaghetti western tale of one man’s journey through the wild west. Treacherous lands, open range, wild women, saloons, shootouts, and ultimately meetin’ your maker.” In my head, when I read that, I did it in Movie Guy’s voice. I can’t help but think those films inspired Nicolas Winding Refn and music supervisor Eric Craig to bathe the city of Los Angeles in a post-electroclash soundscape. I am pretty sure it was gray and rainy more often than it was bright and sunny. It inspired me, one rainy day, to make a mix celebrating rainy days, as they are quite rare here in SoCal. I named it after the ubiquitous G’n’R’ track, yet I spared everyone the song. I am sure we all heard that song enough in the 90s. The mix however, like weather, is pretty eclectic and all over the place. I started off in funk and soul, then move into jazz standards, then to post punk prog rock into a couple 90s alternative standbys, then to classic rock and folk, and finishing it off on a country vibe. I think it flows rather nicely, like a rainy day. So if it’s raining in your neck of the woods, kick back, pour some tea and enjoy some rainy day tunes. DOWNLOAD MIX
