Summer has officially ended in New York. The blistering hot humid days are behind us, finally. It’s absolutely amazing outside—reminds me of Santa Monica actually. To celebrate the end of summer I wanted to share a mix I’ve been nursing all summer long.
As usual, it’s an eclectic mix of classics from the likes of Iggy and the Stooges, T. Rex, Funkadelic, and Tom Tom Club as well as new faves like Weird Dreams, Absofacto, Van She, Islands, and Delicate Steve among others. I had this mix on while venturing into Brooklyn not too long ago when the sun burned out under the Manhattan skyline.
Enjoy!

Nimefurahi is Swahili for “I’m Happy.” And I’m happy to bring this bright, eclectic mix of African and African inspired music. Artists like Paul Simon and Vampire Weekend have found a muse in the music of Africa. The beats are infectious, the melodies are optimistic, and the vocals soulful. Enjoy!

My wife Ashley and I took a drive along the PCH yesterday while listening to this mix. We drove up into the Santa Ynez mountains for a hike up to the falls near Eagle Rock. The mix made for the perfect golden sunlit drive. I didn’t quite plan it but this collection of songs somehow perfectly encapsulates the emotion and feeling of Southern California. From my current obsession that is the Alabama Shakes, to the much slept on LA band Rival Sons, to Best Coast’s ode to SoCal, to Bahamas beachy “Caught me Thinking” among the other classics from the likes of Nirvana, Elvis, Dylan, and the Boss. My original intent was to simply make a pure rock mix. What resulted was an ode, nay, tribute to this wonderful state of California. We will miss you.

A few days ago I was listening to “Pet Sounds” by the Beach Boys and when the album got to “Let’s Go Away For a While” I thought to myself, “wow, Stereolab must had heard this and thought ‘we need to make music that sounds JUST like this.‘” So afterwards, I began stringing together a bunch of music I love that sort of has this 60s mod post pop vibe to it. I think the music has this free spirited and somewhat French vibe. That’s obviously due to the Stereolab I think. The mix feels perfect for the spring season. With it’s effervescence and charm, it goes perfect with a sunny day or could even brighten up any spring shower. Enjoy!

Lately in LA, spring is winter and winter is spring and they’re all summer. It all feels the same. This is just a simple mix of tracks that I am currently loving and listening to quite a bit. Enjoy!
