I stumbled, more like tumbld, onto some beautiful paintings by Gérard Schlosser that depict cropped vignettes of women scantily clad sun bathing. The images provoked a slow building mix that I started in the beginning of summer that I just wrapped up a couple nights ago. I am very happy with this mix as it has a very free spirited, nipple poking out vibe about it. There are a lot of bands that I also just discovered recently that I am obsessed with. Dick Diver that kicks off the mix, Twerps which I am loving, Millieu which reminds me of early Boards of Canada, Sinkane who is like a mix of Toro y Moi, Prince, and Paul Simon, and Dirty Art Club—love that instrumental.

Anyways, I am rambling. Just listen and enjoy as we say goodbye to summer and our summer crush’s (I’m looking at you Lizzy Caplan)

Enjoy!

Mark Yamamoto, aka Kube, was kind enough to share this awesome mix this week. It’s been a bit since Mark’s been a guest, honestly since the blog has had any guest mixer, so it’s exciting to once again share someone’s hard work crafting a listening experience.

Mark says it’s still hot in LA so he wanted to create a later summer mix to vibe off of. The songs, like the weather, have warmth, soul, and are generally fun and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Also, this is a continuous mix file so please refrain from asking for individual mp3 tracks for the songs.

Thanks Mark!

Enjoy the mix!

I have always been a fan of classic psychedelic prog rock from the 60s and 70s. It’s exciting to see and hear a new slew of bands of the last few years to start to break back into the classic sound while simultaneously modernizing it. Bands such as Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Ariel Pink really started to push the sound to the limits bringing a bit of garage rock and new wave into the mix. Other, more slightly, traditionalists are also on my repeat listening list such as Mac Demarco, Broadcast, and King Krule. I’ve thrown in some other niche weirdo artists to spice it up such as Connan Mockasin, Ducktails, Timbre Timbre, and MGMT to name a few. It should be a nice trippy mix to listen to on your next trip.

Enjoy!

It’s been scorching in Austin the last few days, even into the evening it’s been pretty hot. This mix is perfect for those hot nights. Sticky, sweaty, sultry beats to bump and hump to. It’s sure to at least make you want to go for a night drive with the windows down to let that warm wind blow while you lose yourself in the evening. Enjoy!

It’s Friday on a hot summer day and all I can think about is sitting poolside with a pina colada or a dark and stormy. There isn’t much more to say about this mix other than it succinctly conjures up summer for your ears more than any mix I think I’ve ever made. Just cool out, and enjoy!

While there are many things I will miss about living in NYC, I am very optimistic about our move to Austin, TX. This city has so much positive vibes. To celebrate, I made a summery mix to listen to either at the beach or at the local swimming hole. Austin has some amazing swimming holes and lagoons. So cheer up, the weather is warm and so is the water!

I’m back on the free market as I recently left my staff position at The Mill. There is something nice about the idea of freedom. I feel like I am once again master of my own destiny and it feels rather refreshing. With this new found freedom should come some more time to dedicate to bringing more mixes.

First up is High Hopes. I titled it after my new found optimism in the future I am forging. The mix itself is a classic “windows down in the summer” mix. It’s a feel good, may make you dance, may make you smile kind of collection. Fun in the sun, you dig.

A little known fact about me is that I absolutely LOVE Prince. In 2009, I was lucky enough to design Prince’s first and only commercial for Target who promoted and sold an exclusive album. I am more of a classic Prince fan however—which brings me to our latest mix.

Imagine stumbling upon an old box of cassettes of mixes made by a hipster from 1986. This is what I tried to embody while making Joie de Vivre. It takes that classic Prince, and the Minneapolis Sound that he pioneered, and builds upon it with classic and modern tracks. They range from funk, pop, new wave, to r&b. I dare you NOT to dance while listening to this mix. No, seriously.

Enjoy!

It feels like we’re finally saying farewell to the longest winter ever. Flowers are now blooming in the park and the clouds have cleared and the sky is sunny. I originally started making this mix a bit ago but finally got around to finishing it. The images come from a beautiful Filson catalog which actually inspired the mix. Take it with you on your next trip into the woods or the mountains or through that next long slog through the winter.

Enjoy!

Long time no see! I wanted to jump back into the mix and share a few things I've been listening to lately. To make up for lost time, I've given you an hour and a half of new and noteworthy tunes (Wild Beasts, Metronomy and Illum Sphere), along with a few of my favorites from last year (King Krule's "Baby Blue", Jon Hopkins' "Immunity"). Hopefully the tracks I've put together will give your ears a bit of a spring cleaning, and potentially open you up to liking something new, even if it's from Skrillex (c'mon, give it a shot!).

The worst of winter is behind us, and hopefully for the warm weather and good music ahead, coast is clear.
